How To Donate Computer Parts
With computers going obsolete quickly, many end up in landfills before the end of their useful lives. If you have used computer parts or an old computer lying around, bring them into a recycling center. The center will use your parts to make a working, refurbished computer system.

1
Don't worry about whether the computer works. A computer recycling center will accept old computers and computer parts even if they aren't working. It will either refurbish the parts or safely dispose of them.

2
Delete any data you don't want anyone to see. If you're donating a bootable computer with a working hard drive, format the drive before donating. If you can't boot the hard drive but are worried about the privacy of your information, you can take it out and either hit it with a hammer or pour water on it. The center will still be able to use the other pieces, even if the hard drive is ruined.

Find a place that accepts donated computer parts. See Resources below for a link to a list of some nonprofit organizations that do.

4
Take in your computer parts. The center will take them in to an office and inventory them. Some centers require a small fee from you when they accept your used computer gear.

5
Get an itemized receipt for the items you donate. You can use this receipt for a tax write-off.
