Most everyone enjoys a splash of color in a winter landscape. Luckily, nature has provided a perfect flower to liven up a drab, dull environment. When most other plants and flowers have long returned to the earth for winter's sleep, the winter pansy is spreading its cheer above ground. It's not difficult to grow winter pansies. Even an inexperienced grower will be pleased with this flower species. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

      Plan to plant your winter pansies in the late summer or early fall.

      Choose pansies from a garden center or plant nursery that are labeled as winter pansies, cold season or cold hardy. Keep in mind that even if the labels aren't worded that specifically, most pansies can withstand hard freezes.

      Plant winter pansies in masses to get the biggest splashes of color. Pansies can be planted in containers for the porch or directly in the ground. When ground planting, space them about 6 inches apart.

      Water pansies well throughout the fall. Be sure to water the soil, not the pansies.

      Deadhead blooms that have lost their luster. This will promote the plant to produce more blooms.

      Create full, bushy pansy plants by pinching off spindly plant legs.

      Remove any foliage that is damaged or starts to curve

      Feed pansies every two weeks with a liquid 15-30-15 plant food. Wet the soil with plain water prior to applying the fertilizer.

      Cover pansies that are in the ground with pine straw prior to a hard freeze. Bring potted winter pansies indoors until the freeze passes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Winter pansies have been known to bloom through the winter holidays. Winter pansies have been known to bloom even in snow. If you allow your pansies to go to seed instead of lifting them out of the ground, they'll return in the spring.
