How to Compare PSAT & SAT Scores

Maybe you've already taken the PSAT and are curious how you'll fare on the SAT. Or maybe you've taken both, and you're curious about how your two scores compare. The SAT is a test usually taken in the junior or early senior years of high school. Many colleges require you to send your SAT scores (although, in some cases, an alternative test may be accepted), and they may base your acceptance partially on those scores. The PSAT is a test taken in early high school, and it is often seen as a "practice" SAT. Although your PSAT scores will not be reported to colleges, they can automatically qualify you for scholarships.

Instructions

1. Subtract the score you received on your SAT essay from your SAT total score. The PSAT does not include an essay, so this will ensure you are comparing the two parts that both tests include: math and English.

2. Take off the zero from the end of the SAT score, or divide your score by 10. The result will be the equivalent PSAT score.

3. Understand that the PSAT is much shorter than the SAT, so the SAT will test your endurance more. The PSAT is only two hours and 10 minutes, whereas the SAT is three hours and 45 minutes.

Tips & Warnings

• Don't focus on the score you received on your PSAT as a predictor of your future SAT score. With practice, you'll be able to raise your SAT score.
