How to Check Instant Message History

There are numerous software programs that allow you to send an "instant message" to a friend or anonymous user. These messages allow you to have a conversation at a much faster rate than if you were to exchange emails with that person. Just as emails can be saved on your computer, your instant message history is saved on your hard drive. By following the steps listed below, you can search for and review your instant message history.

Instructions

  1. My Computer

    • 1

      Open "My Computer."

    • 2

Double click the hard drive that contains your instant messaging programs. This will most likely be your "C" drive.

    • 3

Open the "Documents and Settings" folder. Then, open the "User Name" folder. The name of this folder will be either your name or the name that you used when you first got the computer.

    • 4

      Open the "My Documents" folder.

    • 5

Search for a folder that has the same name as your instant messaging program. In other words, AIM users would look for a folder with the phrase "AIM" in it. Once you find that folder, double click on it to open the folder.

    • 6

Open your instant message user folder. This is the folder that is the same name as your instant messaging name. Once you do, you will find a folder named "Logs" or "History." Open that folder to check the instant message history for that user name.

    Search

    • 7

Locate and click on the "Search" button located in the taskbar. A window will open.

    • 8

      Click "All files and folders."

    • 9

Type the name of the instant message program you use into the "All or part of the file name" box. For example, AIM users will type "AIM" into the box. Then, click "Search."

    • 10

Read over the names of the folders that appear in the window. Open the "Logs," "Logger" or "History" folder. Which folder appears will depend on the program you use.

    • 11

Open the user name folder. From there, you will be able to check the instant message history for that particular user.
