Greeting cards continue to be popular, despite the ease of use and affordability of email, text messages and other forms of communication. According to the Greeting Card Association (GCA), approximately 7 billion greeting cards are bought each year in the United States, generating about $7.5 billion in retail sales. However, for some, the greeting card may be losing its charm. It could be the high price tag on many greeting cards or the hassle of having to shop in crowded greeting card aisles, especially during popular holidays and seasons. Printable greeting cards offer an affordable, easy alternative to store-bought greeting cards.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a photo or image for your greeting card. Most websites allow you to personalize your greeting card with a picture from your collection, such as a family picture or your kid's portrait. If that idea appeals to you, pick out the picture that you think would best fit the occasion and your greeting card. Alternatively, choose an image from the artwork available on the website where you will be creating and printing your greeting card.

  2. Step 2

Visit a few websites that offer printable cards. Some of them are www.americangreetings.com, www.mycardmaker.com and www.bluemountain.com (see Resources). Some, like American Greetings, require you to sign up. American Greetings offers a free trial for a limited period, after which a fee is charged for your cards. Others, such as gotfreecards.com, require no sign up and are free, as of May 2009 (see Resources). Browse a few sites and decide which you like best.

  3. Step 3

Click on the "Start, Create my Card" or similar link on the website you have chosen. Choose the option to use your own photo or select an image from the website's stock. Make your selection and proceed. If you want to use your own image, upload your picture from your computer. Some websites allow you to access your web albums. If you choose to use the website's artwork, browse through its selection of images and pick one.

  4. Step 4

Type in your text in the space provided. Make sure the greeting card copy reflects your feelings and is a personalized note to the receiver. You can experiment with different fonts and colors on most websites.

  5. Step 5

Print out the card. Most websites provide a "Print" link which activates your printer. You will be able to preview your card and make changes before you print.

Tips & Warnings
  • After printing your card, add a hand-written note and signature or initials for that personal touch.
