Make A Green Screen

Green screens are a great addition to your video productions. Many people believe that only Hollywood can make such wonderful additions to their video studio, however you can make your own green screen to use when making films in your own home!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a drill
  • 4 bungee cords or strong rubber bands
  • green fabric
  • PVC pipe
  1. Step 1

First, you will need buy your green screen material. This can be any type of non-reflective green material. Felt, fleece, or even cotton. You need to buy a big enough size. 10 feet will be plenty. You want to buy a little to make sure you have enough to complete your green screen.

  2. Step 2

Next, you need to cut your fabric to the desired size. It's best to clean out a large space in a room and clear it of all distractions and measure before cutting your green screen material.

  3. Step 3

There are two ways to put up your green screen. You can simply staple the fabric to a wall, or you can build a frame.

To build your green screen frame, you will need to buy PVC piping from a local hardware store. It shouldn't cost you more than 10 - 15 bucks. You will need to make your frame slightly bigger than your green screen material cut out. Say, your material is 4x6, you need your frame to be 5x7.

  4. Step 4

If your building a frame, you need to cut holes in your fabric about every foot. Drill holes in your PVC to match that, and then loop your material to the pipe with loop bungee cords or strong rubber bands.

Remember to film in a well lit room and enjoy your newly found green screen effects!

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use a digital camera to shoot.
  • Be careful and use the proper safety methods when building your frame.

Thanks for sharing with us these useful tips.

The Various keying techniques for green screen have really come a long way over the last few years in various editing software packages. One can use Adobe Premiere Pro and you will be amazed with the results. As long as the backdrop is lit correctly, it is not a problem to key out the neon green, and you don't see that unsightly crude green outline around the person.
