Step 1
The best step to take is to prevent an infestation. If you think that you are being bitten at night, do a sweep of your home to see if you can locate any bugs. Look in furniture, luggage, bedding, clothes hamper and any place that has many cracks and crevices for them to hide.
-
Step 2
If you can spare money for another mattress, this is usually the easiest way to get rid of bed bugs. Simply throw out your old mattress and buy a new one. However, if you cannot afford a new mattress, try vacuuming and applying a sealable cover to your mattress. All clothes, linens, and bedding should be washed in hot water, and the immediate area vacuumed thoroughly.
-
Step 3
You typically do not want to use insecticides because bedbugs live in your bed. You don't want to be sleeping in chemicals do you? Sticky traps, the ones commonly used for mice, work extremely well in capturing bedbugs. If you do use insecticides, do not spray them on your bed. Rather, spray them around your bed or any other areas you might suspect bed bugs exist.
-
Step 4
If these steps do not work, it is time to call your local exterminator and turn the problem over to the professionals.
