DECIDE WHERE IT WILL GO and MEASURE the AREA(s)

If you don't have a room or floor in mind, walk around your home and be thinking about a mosaic for your foyer (it will make a great first impression!), a bathroom or kitchen floor, a large table, a hallway or landing, or a sunroom.

Measure the area(s) that you think might be candidates for a mosaic and then prepare to be inspired by the choices, colors and styles that are out there.

FIND A MARBLE MOSAIC that SPEAKS TO YOU

Browse to your heart's content! You can find florals, sea life, animals, landscapes, figurines, symbols... almost any design. There are so many ways for you to find and buy marble mosaic. My first was purchased on eBay and came from Lebanon (rolled up and shipped with no damage or problem!). You can also find sources in the US, even retailers local to you, if you need to 'see and feel' before buying. Some suggestions:

LOCAL: tile and flooring centers, home improvement stores, any store that has a large selection of stone and tile flooring will be likely to carry mosaic medallions (circular designs similar to but less intricate than the one pictured here. A showroom of the business Architectural Ceramics carries some beautiful marble medallions. These designs may be mass-produced, so if originality is important to you, consider ordering a custom mosaic or buying from a specialized source.

ON-LINE: ebaY has hundreds of listings, all sizes and shapes and configurations, priced under $300, some under $100. Many come from as far away as Syria and Lebanon, but there are also US distributors. Shipping can be pricey due to the weight of marble and especially for large pieces, so keep that in mind when you price.

You can also Google mosaic marble and get distributors like Mosaic Direct, Marble Mosaic, and many more. The thrill of the hunt!

CONSIDER IT AN INVESTMENT, A WORK OF ART

Whether you are paying $100 or $500 and up, the mosaic is truly a work of art. The mosaic will bring a distinctive touch to any room it is placed in. It is definitely a "WOW" factor.

USE THE MOSAIC AS A FOCAL POINT

My guest bath was stripped bare to the studs and remodeled entirely around the mosaic I purchased for that room. I planned for it to be a 'runner' or artistic carpet, in this narrow floor of a full bath. When the mosaic arrived, I selected tumbled marble tile to complete the floor, and similar marble tile for the bathtub. I chose pale cream sink, tub and toilet so it did not detract from the mosaic. The wall color was chosen from the palette of the mosaic.

SELECT ARTWORK to COMPLEMENT YOUR MOSAIC

As a finishing touch to this art-inspired bath, I added a hand-forged bronze mirror with cat-tails and a lily pad found at an arts and crafts show. I added Brizo rubbed bronze fixtures and called it a success. You can, too!
