Get rid of the mosquitoes in your yard and start enjoying your outdoor living space more often.

Mosquitoes can be a challenge if you live in a rural or damp area.

However, with some patience and consistent work you can virtually rid yourself of the bloodsuckers.

1. 

   GET RID OF STANDING WATER WHEREVER POSSIBLE.

   Getting rid of mosquitoes works best if you can remove their breeding ground and natural habitat. Clogged gutters, filled pails, puddles of water in the back yard, poor draining, etc. If you have natural water nearby or enjoy a backyard pond you may have live without this step.

2. 

   KEEP YOUR GRASS WELL MOWN TO GET RID OF MOSQUITOS

   Mosquitoes love the tall grass since it maintains the moisture, provides shade, and gives protection from predators. regularly cutting your grass will also provide a greener and softer yard. Simply avoid scalping your grass by cutting too much at once.

3. PLANT MOSQUITO REPELLING PLANTS TO LIVE MOSQUITO FREE.

   Citronella, Catnip, marigolds, lemon basil, and lemon grass have all been reported to be natural mosquito repellents. Plant a border with a mix of these plants around the yard and around any water feature.

4. ATTRACT MOSQUITO EATING BIRDS.

   Birds are an attractive way to get rid of mosquitoes in your yard. Purple martins are often reported to eat mosquitoes but scientific tests prove otherwise. Make your yard bird friendly with human made housing and hope to attract a variety of birds.

5. BUILD BAT BOXES TO GET RID OF MOSQUITOS.

   If you can handle the idea of a bat in your yard, this is the best way to go. A few bats can radically reduce the mosquito population since they are the most avid mosquito predator.

6. 

   STOCK PONDS WITH MOSQUITO FISH AND GUPPIES.

   The mosquito fish can eat 100 larvae of mosquitoes an hour. Guppies are more temperamental, so if radical water temperature changes may occur, go with mosquito fish.

7. 

   USE NATURAL MOSQUITO SPRAYS INSTEAD OF INSECTICIDES.

   Use a mixture of lemon scented liquids and a pump sprayer, a store-bought spray garlic barrier, or burn citronella candles.

Tips & Warnings

• A fresh lemon spray of the yard before a big event can go a long way toward getting rid of mosquitos.

• Avoid pesticides. There are pesticides that will rid your yard of mosquitoes temporarily. Unfortunately, they also kill dragon flies and other mosquito predators as well as potentially polluting nearby waterways.
