Make Pierogi Lasagna

Pierogi Lasagna is an easy and delicious main dish that is enjoyed by kids and parents alike. Pierogies are wonderful potato stuffed dumplings. In many parts of the U.S. You can find them made homemade. If you do stumble across homemade pierogies, be sure you get them quick. They won't be around long. Many grocery stores are now carrying frozen pierogies, often under the brand name Mrs. T's. These are a tasty alternative to the hand made version. They are easy to prepare and children love them.

When using pierogies as a variation on the classic lasagna recipe, you'll find the combination works nicely. The pockets of potato and cheese add a special flavor to an old standby. Give it a try this week and your family will thank you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 Pkg. Frozen Pierogies
  • 1 lb. Ground Beef
  • 1 lb. Ground Italian Sausage
  • 32 oz. Pasta Sauce
  • 3 Cups Mozzarella Cheese
  • 1 Cup Shredded Parmesan Cheese
  1. Step 1

Start a pot of water boiling now. You will need to cook the pierogies as an intial step in the recipe. Given that it takes a few minutes to get a pot of water boiling, start that process now. Keep an eye on the pierogies to make sure they are cooking properly. Typically with frozen pierogies, they will be done after boiling for about 5 minutes. When the pierogies are done, drain them well.

  2. Step 2

Begin browning the sausage and ground beef in a large frying pan or skillet over medium heat. Start the sausage first as it may need a little longer to fully cook. After about 5 minutes add the ground beef. Be sure to stir the meat occasionally and break it up into crumble size pieces. When done, drain any excess grease.

  3. Step 3

Some ground meat frying tips: It is important to cook the meat until it is done. However, don't overcook as it will be going into the oven for a second cooking. You also can consider adding any spices you may like to the ground meat as it cooks, e.g. pepper, garlic, oregano, etc. This will incorporate those flavors into the meat now. It is also good to consider spooning off some of the grease as you cook.

  4. Step 4

Return the drained meat mixture to the skillet. Add the pasta sauce and simmer for a few minutes to fully integrate the sauce and meat mixture. Use low heat and stir to prevent any burning. If your skillet is not large enough, use a pot.

  5. Step 5

Combine the mozzarella and parmesean cheeses together. Split the cheese mixture into three equal portions.

  6. Step 6

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  7. Step 7

Grease a 13” x 9” baking dish with either cold butter, nonstick spray, or shortening.

  8. Step 8

Put just over 1/3 of the sauce mixture on the bottom of your baking dish. Don't worry about being exact. You should focus on a good cover of sauce. Place the pierogies flat side down on top of the sauce mixture. You should need one half of your pierogies to make this first layer. Sprinkle the first divided portion of your cheese on top of the pierogi layer.

  9. Step 9

Again put 1/3 of the sauce on top of the layer. Spread it equally across the layer. Place the remaining pierogies flat side down on top of the sauce. Sprinkle the second portion of cheese on top.

  10. Step 10

Place the remaining sauce mixture on top of the cheese and spread it equally. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of the sauce.

  11. Step 11

Cover the baking dish with aluminium foil. Place the dish in the center of the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking until the lasagna bubbles. This should be approximately 10-15 minutes longer.
