Training your puppy to follow simple commands and to go to the bathroom on puppy pads is easy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • puppy pads
  • newspaper
  • puppy treats
  1. Step 1

The first thing that you need to do when you get a puppy is to potty train it. If you wait to train it you will have ruined floors, rugs and other items in your house. Start by getting a nice sized box, and put a puppy pad in it. Make sure that the pad takes up the whole box. Put a bowl of water in the box with the puppy, and keep it in the box until it urinates on it.

  2. Step 2

Next, take the puppy pad out of the box, and put it where you want the puppy to use the restroom. He will smell his scent and go in the same place. When I trained my puppy, I was teaching, so he was in the house for at least eight hours a day while I was at work. Since I didn’t want anything getting messy, I put a washing machine drain pan under his puppy pad. It is made of thick plastic that can be sprayed with bleach and sprayed off with water outside. If he goes to the puppy pad, give him a piece of a puppy treat. He will start to connect treats to doing something good.

  3. Step 3

Take the puppy for a walk every day. Put a harness or collar on the puppy, and encourage him to walk by holding a treat in front of him if he fights the leash. Don’t drag the puppy or yank hard on the leash if he starts to be stubborn. Make sure you give him a command for walking. Just say walk when you start to move. When you stop, say stop. Hold the leash tightly so he can’t keep moving. Tell him to sit, and gently push his bottom down. After he responds to each command correctly, give him a small piece of a treat. Make sure to keep your commands consistent, don’t change the wording or you will confuse the puppy.

  4. Step 4

After he learns the commands for walk, stop and sit. You can add other commands. One very important is stay. To teach him this command, have him sit, tell him to stay and walk a few steps away. He will probably try to come to you. Tell him no, lead him back to the spot and tell him stay try it again. It will take several tries before he catches on. When he does, give him a treat. Once he catches on, stand further away from him each time when you give him the stay command.

  5. Step 5

If your dog knows these commands, he is ready to shown off to everyone.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember be gentle with the puppy. If you yank and pull on the leash or collar he will start to hate the leash.
