How to Prepare for the First Meeting with your Divorce Attorney

Prior to meeting with your new divorce attorney, have your questions and paperwork ready ahead of time. It will save both you and your divorce lawyer time and money.

Instructions

    • 1

Know what you want out of your divorce. Before you meet with your divorce lawyer, assess what you would like to get out of a divorce agreement. Think about issues such as child custody, spousal support and how you would like to divide your property before you meet with your divorce attorney.

    • 2

Make a list of questions to ask your divorce lawyer. Write down any questions you have about the divorce process, such as how long it will take to finalize your divorce, how many times you will have to go to divorce court and how much money you will need to pay your divorce lawyer up front.

    • 3

Get your financial document together. Your divorce lawyer will need to see copies of your tax returns, pay stubs, mortgage, car loans and debts in order to file for child support and alimony. If possible, make your divorce attorney her own copies before you go to the first meeting.

    • 4

Make copies of other related documents. The divorce attorney will need to see all legal documents related to your marriage, such as prenuptial agreements, adoption decrees for your children and restraining orders you may have taken out against your spouse. If you used another attorney for any of these other proceedings, bring his name and phone number to the meeting with your new divorce lawyer.
