How to Acquire an ACCESS Card from the N.Y. Public Library

An ACCESS card is required to review any reference material on-site. Those of you conducting research will find this card most beneficial. It is free to obtain a card. Once the card is in your possession you’ll be able to explore the electronic catalog from home.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Proof of address
  • Identification
  1. Step 1

    To options for applying for an ACCESS card: 1) At your local library or 2) online http://www2.nypl.org/access2/

  2. Step 2

    For faster service apply online. Be sure to copy the assigned 5-6 digit #, bring it to the library along with your identification (ex. Driver’s license).

  3. Step 3

    Otherwise you may use the application computer located in each library (online). The ACCESS card may be utilized immediately. The card will look like a regular library card without the function of one.

  4. Step 4

    This card is for research only! No library material may leave the building unless it is a circulating item. If you wish to borrow apply for a library card as well.

  5. Step 5

    If you have either card you may link them both (Library or ACCESS Card).

  6. Step 6

    Collections available for research include, but aren’t limited to article clippings, pictures, microfilm, music scores, and even film.

  7. Step 7

    Access the online database to retrieve Call Numbers or Song Index Numbers from the CATNYP Catalog.

  8. Step 8

    Approach the desired desk.

  9. Step 9

    Present card, have your list ready (Call and Song Index Numbers)

  10. Step 10

    At the Performing Arts Library (Lincoln Center) 1 Song Index # is allowed at a time. 2 Index #s may be given with a library card.

    Return research material to the exact desk the items were borrowed from.

  12. Step 12

    Some material will require permission from a librarian at a specified desk to make photocopies.

  13. Step 13

    Depending on what you research you may have to fill out a little form.

  14. Step 14

    Purchase a Copy Card in case you need photocopies. (A Copy Card machine takes $1 bill). The machine will deduct a one-time 30 cents fee. Your initial card will have a value of 70 cents. Refill as needed. There is no expiration date. Use at any of the branches in Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten Island.

    View the CATNYP Catalog with your cell phone. You’ll need to have wireless internet access. Type this website: http://catnyp.nypl.org/screens/help_airpac.html

Tips & Warnings
  • Begin your research from home or work with the online database. Make your visit at the library as progressive as possible. Be prepared and save time.
  • Buy or refill your card prior. Bring enough cash for copies. Some machines take coins.
  • Copy Card machines only take bills. For larger bills you may use the available Multi-bill changer.
  • Research materials are required back within a specified time frame (generally 2hrs). Time frame may differ from location to location. Anything brought back late will incur a late fee.
  • Each department has a cut-off time to use research material. Inquire about the cut-off time.
  • Lack of funds can bring your copying to a complete halt.
