Step 1
As a mother of two sets of twins, I have learned that each one of the children are extremely different. Each one of them have a different personality and have an interest in different things.
-
Step 2
Recognize that twins are siblings. Single children that are born to a family at separate times tend to get that automatic separation from their siblings. Offer that separation of twins and treat them as siblings.
-
Step 3
Avoid treating them as a whole instead of individuals. If you wouldn't dress all your kids the same, then don't dress your twins the same.
-
Step 4
Avoid referring to them as twins. Use their names when you are referring to them. Group all of your children as your family, your kids, not the older one and the twins.
-
Step 5
Spend time with your twins individually. Play with them and talk with them one on one. You can use this time to get to know your child for who they are. This one on one time will also help them develop their own unique personality and interests.
-
Step 6
Encourage them to make their own choices. Avoid giving your twins the same things so each one gets one to be fair. Avoid allowing the children to get involved in the same things just because the other one is doing it. You will notice when your child carries a strong desire to do something.
-
Step 7
There will be things that each of your children may like and dislike. They may even like the same things. Giving your children individual identities will give your children confidence and security.
