Become a Fitness Instructor for a Health Club

So you think that there is no better job than getting paid to be a fitness instructor and workout? I have to agree! I'm blessed to instruct several different fitness classes and you can to! It is easier than you think to get started.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine which kind of fitness instructor you would like to be by taking fitness classes, watching Fit t. v., or renting exercise videos. Decide what your particular taste of fitness is and make a plan.

  2. Step 2

Get in shape. You need to not only be able to do the repetitious movement of your class but talk most of the way through. If you aren't in shape you aren't going to be able to instruct. It is that simple. With that being said, notice I didn't say before you become a fitness instructor you need to lose a bunch of weight. You don't necessarily have to be in model shape to be a fitness instructor. Some women actually say it is less intimidating for them to join a class in which the instructor doesn't have a perfect body. Focus on getting healthy not looking perfect.

  3. Step 3

Whatever you choose, begin by studying up on it. Most brands of fitness have plenty of information about them on the world wide web. Begin to learn the vocabulary, classic moves, etc. Begin to build a base of knowledge.

  4. Step 4

Talk to your local gym or YMCA and see what they need. It doesn't matter if you really want to teach Zumba if they already have three more instructors than they need. You may have to start in something else and work your way up. Some Gyms or YMCAs train fitness instructors in house and some require pre-earned certifications. Check with locally to see what you need.

  5. Step 5

If your gym requires certification, look into getting certified (no brainer, huh?) There are many certifications that you can get. Before you start researching see if your gym prefers one over another. My personal favorites: Aerobics and Fitness Association of America and American Council on Exercise (see below for links)

  6. Step 6

Realize that the class you want to teach may require a more specialized certification. If so research where is best to earn that certification.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful of bogus "certifications". You can find all kinds of certifications on the web. Make sure the one you are paying for is legit.
