Step 1
The first step to play better golf an get better scores isn't even a physical. It is a mental endeavor. Minimize your risk. How likely are you to hit a 220 yard shot carry the water and hit the green avoiding the sand? Would the better play be to lay up and hit an easy wedge on to the green? Remember the goal is to score better, and this usually means consistency.

Step 2
Practice putting and chipping, incessantly. This is probably the easiest way to play better golf. Around half your shouts are within 30 yards of the hole. Practice putting and chipping both uphill and down. Most golfers can easily shave 5-10 strokes off their game by improving their short game.

Step 3
Go to the driving range and leave your driver at home. Hit your irons with a focus on consistency. Make sure the driving range has yardage markers. You need to know how far each club hits, so you are never guessing on the course.

Step 4
Now finally bring out your driver, but instead of distance work on hitting it consistently strait. A 220 yard drive in the fairway almost always leads to better scores then a 300 yard drive behind a tree in the rough.
