To succeed as an online or virtual college/university student, you will need to take advantage of the resources that are available to you. Follow these steps to increase your potential for success in an online school environment.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know your class requirements. At the beginning of each online class, be sure to read and print out your syllabus for the class, so that you will know what your class objectives and requirements are. You'll be able to plan your studies around the assignments, by paying attention to due dates and deadlines.

Using a personal planner or calendar can be a helpful reminder tool as you continue your studies. Keep your assignment sheets, syllabi, and other important documents in an easily accessible area for reference. Time management is an important factor in becoming a successful online student.

Make sure you take the time to browse the online class sections and tabs in your learning environment, so that you can become familiar with them. You'll need to know where to go for online class discussions or assignments and who to contact if you have class or technical challenges.

  2. Step 2

Become familiar with your textbooks, software applications, DVDs, and other learning aids needed for your class. This is especially helpful when writing papers or taking online tests.

  3. Step 3

Take advantage of chapter summaries, visual aids, keyword reviews, spell-checkers, dictionaries, online libraries, databases, glossaries, and indexes to maximize learning the main aspects of each chapter or section of the course.

Tips & Warnings
  • Create templates for assignments or papers that are similar in nature to save time.
  • Knowing the main terminology or vocabulary words of each section can help you to succeed efficiently.
  • If you need help, ask for it. Many online instructors can be reached by email, phone, or video conference during certain office hours.
  • Don't procrastinate. Stay on top of your deadlines and assignments. It is always better to turn in an average assignment, than no assignment at all (late grade deductions, etc.).
  • High speed internet (DSL, satellite, cable) is a must-have to succeed in an online learning environment with streaming videos, online tests, etc. Don't take a chance with a dial-up connection if you don't have to.
