During summer vacation the kids are out of school and it's easy to let the education of your kids get put on the back burner. It is important to continue teaching them to help retain the information your child has learned.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check with your child's teacher to see what areas of study your child may have struggled with or areas your child needed extra help with during the school year. During spring break find time for your child to review the concepts the teacher may have suggested.

  2. Step 2

Keep them reading. Set up a reading log during their summer vacation. Encourage them to read at least a half hour every day. Have them record the time that they read and the pages they read on a calendar. Reward them when they have finished a book or so many hours of reading.

  3. Step 3

Have them start a journal during the summer and encourage them to continue adding to their journals about what they are doing during their summer break. Again you can set up a reward system for a number of pages written or the number of entries written in their journal.

  4. Step 4

Pick up educational material that contains activities that the child can do to keep learning during the summer. You can find books at the dollar store for elementary age children with activities for math and language. The internet is full of free printable activities for all ages.

  5. Step 5

Keep your ears and eyes open for activities in your community that can be learning activities. Local libraries and churches hold special events in the summer that can be opportunities for you kids to keep learning in the summer.

  6. Step 6

Turn summer activities and family trips into learning activities. Explain to your kids the back ground of the places you are visiting. Be observant about your surroundings, there is several learning opportunities. You can search for letters, spell things, add up numbers and so many other things. Have them write in their journals suggested in step 3.
