According to Wikipedia, HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a compact audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed digital data. If you were to buy a new television today, chances are, it will have an available HDMI hookup. Like some other cables, you have to be careful of maximum cable length, but the HDMI specification does not define a maximum cable. The length of an HDMI cable depends on the construction quality and the materials used in the cable. Just buy the length you need.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2-HDMI Cables
  • 2-Composite Cables (the yellow, red, and white one)
  1. Step 1
    Hooking up the Cables

    Hooking up the Cables

They say a picture says a thousand words, so please refer to the image as well. We are going to hook up a cable/satellite box, DVD (or DVR) recorder, and a LCD television using two HDMI cables and two Composite A/V cables (the yellow, red, and white ones). Make sure everything is turned off.

  2. Step 2

Using the coax cable coming out of your wall that supplies your cable or satellite signal, plug that into the RF IN of the cable/satellite box. Connect an HDMI cable from the OUT on the cable/satellite box, to the HDMI IN on the TV (note which Input Number (Video 1 for example, or it just say 1) is next to the HDMI for future use). Next, connect a Composite cable from the OUT on the cable/satellite box, to the Composite IN on the DVD unit.

  3. Step 3

Using your second HDMI cable, connect that from the OUT on DVD unit to another HDMI IN on the TV. Next, using the second Composite cable, connect that one from the Composite OUT on the DVD unit to the Composite IN on the TV (again noting the Input Number).

  4. Step 4

Now we will confirm all is working. Turn on the TV and the cable/satellite box. Change the TV’s input to the Input Number that your HDMI cable is in from the cable/satellite box. You should have both video and sound if hooked up correctly.

  5. Step 5

Next, to check the DVD, change to Input again to the number you connected the Composite cable to from the DVD to the TV. Again, if there is video and sound, it is hooked up correctly.
