You've done the hard work. You've graduated college with your degree in hand and you are ready to hit the job market. Where do you start? Perhaps you've listened to your college advisors or gone to the "career counseling center." But more times than not most college graduates in today's job market face the harsh reality that the information given to them by the college may well be out-dated or ineffective. When I graduated college the alumni office advised me to "go through the telephone book" and randomly call companies in fields that I was interested in. I don't need to tell you that this was an effort in futility. I ended up with zero interviews and no jobs. The only thing I did receive were calloused fingers from the amount of calling I did. But my friends, never fear as I am here to steer you into the right direction and help you to land that penultimate first job!

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • computer
  • clear head
  • optimism
  • references from college
  • support of family and friends
  • willingness to change
  • some money for wardrobe
  1. Step 1

HOMEWORK. Do the research. What ever it is that you want to do, get down to the library or online and find people who've done what it is you seek to do and trace their steps and then do the same.

  2. Step 2

IMMERSE. Bury yourself in the industry. Learn all you can about it and be knowlegeable.

  3. Step 3

Compile your experience. Write the best resume you can. Look at resumes of others in the field. Send out resumes. Set up interviews. Network. Find new ways. Learn all you can. Work hard at getting a job. Never stop for a moment. Don't be afraid to take a low level job in the field you want as many have worked their way up this way.

  4. Step 4

Dress for success. Be positive and upbeat. Know the field and develop skills no one else has in that profession. Know your competition and be the best you can be and never ever give up!

  5. Step 5

Sacrifice. Give up whatever it takes to land the job, be it family, friends, that significant other. You need to put yourself first right now. Everyone will respect you if you land a job, but nobody had much respect if you're unemployed. Keep at it. Keep going and move away if you have to, or lock yourself in a room and study code all day and night. Do whatever it takes to make yourself the perfect person for that job and keep at it. NEVER GIVE UP!

Tips & Warnings
  • NEVER GIVE UP!
  • Avoid negative people, places and things.
  • Don't let anybody steal your dreams.
