Shop Less During a Recession

Shopping is sometimes a hobby and sometimes a necessity, but this recession has altered many people's ability to shop as much as they would like. It is important, during this time, to stick to some simple shopping rules to get through this economic slump.

Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Good Shoes
  • Strong willpower
  1. Step 1

Rule 1: There is a difference between a need and a want. This doesn't mean that you can't have fashionable work clothes if you need them. You need to be honest with yourself though. Make a list of the things you need before you go to shop. Be sure that you really NEED those things. Lay out all of the clothes or items you are considering purchasing before you go to the checkout. Look at each item and ask yourself, Do I really need this? If the answer is no, put it back. It is difficult at the time, but you will be glad you did in the future. Remember, the clothing doesn't make you, you make the clothing.

  2. Step 2

Rule 2: Used can be as good as new. This goes for clothing, cars, appliances, and more. Don't be afraid to look on Ebay, Craigslist or Etsy vintage stores for great used deals online. Goodwill, Plato's Closet and Buffalo Exchange are all great vintage clothing stores also. You can also purchase certified used cars that will look and perform just as well as new cars. Yard sales are great as well for finding appliances and clothing.

  3. Step 3

Rule 3: Credit is for emergencies only. Don't run up a credit card bill just to purchase something that you really want but really don't need. You'll be excited about the purchase for a week and paying for the purchase a year afterward.

  4. Step 4

Rule 4: Books, C.D.'s and DVD's are free at the library. Before you spend money to rent a movie, check out your local library. You might be surprised to see what they have. Books are great entertainment and are at your fingertips for free through the library. For music enthusiasts, you can find all sorts of artists at the library. Check out the C.D., burn it and return it. It is so easy and can save you a ton of money.

  5. Step 5

Hopefully these rules will help you spend less and appreciate what you have more. Recessions are never fun or easy, but smart and sensible actions will help get us through this downturn.
