On June 1, 2009, any U.S. citizen returning from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, or Bermuda by land or sea must provide either a passport or passport card. There are websites that offer expedited passport services that can process your passport in 24 hours. A passport card cannot be used for international air travel so you are better off getting a passport. The following steps are needed to obtain a passport in a rush.

Things You'll Need:

  • Certified birth certificate
  • Social security card
  1. Step 1

    Go to the U.S. Department of State website and download the form DS-11 application for a U.S. passport. Complete the DS-11 form do not sign the form until you present it in person to an acceptance agent.

  2. Step 2

    Look on the internet for an express passport agent. Shop around getting a passport in a rush can cost as much as $200 + government fees. You will need to provide your social security card to the acceptance facility or passport agency.

  3. Step 3

    You will need to provide a certified copy of your birth certificate. A certified birth certificate must have a raised embossed seal or it will be rejected. See below for information on how to obtain a certified birth certificate.

  4. Step 4

    You will also need a copy of your primary identification, which are driver’s license, or government identification.

  5. Step 5

    Also, take two passport pictures, which need to be 2x2 in size. The price for an expedited passport depends on how fast you need it 24 to 48 hour processing can cost over $200.
