Cats with long hair need regular grooming to prevent matting and encourage a health coat.

It is important to groom a long haired cat regularly. In fact, it is important to brush all cats on a regular basis. You may think that since cats are always grooming themselves that it isn't necessary to brush them. However, regular grooming of your cat has many benefits. If your cat has long hair it can prevent mats and keep their coat silky. Brushing any cat, regardless of their coat length, can remove lose hairs, which means there is less hair deposited around your house. If done correctly grooming your cat is a pleasurable experience for the cat and can give you some valuable bonding time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soft bristled brush for cats
  • Wide tooth comb that is specially designed for cats with long hair.
  1. Step 1

Purchase the appropriate cat grooming tools. To groom your long haired cat you will need a soft bristled brush and a wide tooth comb that are specially designed to be used on cats.

  2. Step 2

Use the soft bristled brush first. After you have found a quiet relaxing place to groom your cat begin by using the soft bristled brush. Gently stroke your cat with the brush all over, except for their face. Hopefully your cat will begin to enjoy this and happily purr away.

  3. Step 3

Use the wide toothed comb. The next step in grooming a long haired cat is the use a wide toothed comb. Gently work the comb through your cat's coat, targeting matted areas. When trying to comb a mat out of your cat's fur don't just start combing from the base of the mat up. Start at the top of the mat and work down. You don't want to be pulling at your cat, as this could hurt and make grooming a bad experience for them.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the grooming steps mentioned above everyday. All you need to do is spend 5 minutes each day grooming your cat. This will reduce shedding, help you bond with your cat, keep long haired cat's mat free and leave your cat with a shiny healthy coat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be gentle
  • Don't be to forceful with your cat. It may take a few times for them to get used to grooming and enjoy it.

on 6/2/2009 Thanks for the info. I am curious. I assume long-haired cats in the wild would not have a grooming problem because they groom each other - is that true?...5
