How to Improve RAM Efficiency

Random access memory, or RAM, is a critical hardware component in computers. RAM temporarily stores data from the computer's hard drive and transfers it to the processor to allow the computer to carry on whatever applications or processes it is running. When a process is stopped, the RAM gains more free space to use toward a different task. RAM efficiency is one of the primary factors that influences how fast a computer operates.

Optimize computer cooling. Like most computer components, RAM runs more efficiency if it is kept cool. A computer case without many fans that is kept in a warm area or in direct sunlight will probably have RAM that runs very hot, which can slow down your computer and cause problems. To better cool your RAM, consider installing additional case fans if possible. Use a screwdriver to open the side of the case, then screw the fan into position over an existing ventilation grate on your tower. Another stopgap measure to cool your RAM is to open the case with a screwdriver and leave the case open as it runs, using an external fan to blow air across the RAM.

Use identical RAM modules. RAM operates best when modules are installed in like pairs. When two different types of RAM are installed together, the more powerful stick will often be compromised and forced to run at the speed of the less efficient RAM stick. Most manufactured computers will come with identical modules if there is more than one module installed.

Use a dedicated graphics card. Some computers have "on-board" graphics cards, which means the graphics processing is carried out by the motherboard instead of a separate card. On-board graphics cards tap into the computer's main RAM, decreasing efficiency. Dedicated graphics cards have their own RAM built in, which frees up the main RAM for other purposes.

Cancel unnecessary processes and programs. When RAM reaches its capacity, it must begin swapping information with the hard drive, which creates computer lag. Canceling programs and processes that you do not use will free up space on the RAM and reduce the chance it will fill up. To cancel processes, use the task manager (hold control, alt and delete), choose the "Processes" tab, select an unwanted process and click "End Process."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan to upgrade your RAM, purchase a type your motherboard can use. Using the wrong type of RAM will likely cause a computer to fail to start up or to crash during operation.
