How to Insert an Excel Workbook Into a Web Page

You have a web page completed and are ready to upload it to your Internet server, but you also have an Excel workbook that you would like to include on your page. However, you are unsure how to go about it. By using the file saving options within Microsoft Excel, the process is streamlined and you will be inserting your workbook in no time.

Instructions

  1. Saving the Excel Workbook

    • 1

Open the Excel workbook you would like to include on your web page. With your cursor, highlight the sections of the workbook to include on the page.

    • 2

Click "File" and "Save As." A "Save As" box will appear. Click on the down arrow of the "Save as type:" box and select "Single File Web Page." Click "Change Title" and name your workbook. This name will appear above the workbook on your web page.

    • 3

Next, click which save option you would like: "Entire Workbook" or "Selection: XXXX" (The XXXX represents the range of cells). The "Selection: XXXX" option will only save what you highlighted. The "Entire Workbook" option will save the entire workbook. Since you have highlighted the spreadsheet, choose the "Selection: XXXX" option.

    • 4

Note the folder that the single web page will be saved to. Save the page within your web page folder. Then click "Save" at the bottom of the "Save As" box.

    • 5

Know that your workbook will be saved as HTML code and now you are ready to insert this code into your web page.

Inserting the Workbook Into Your Web Page

    • 6

Know that depending on what web page creation package you used, you can insert the workbook directly as an object or you can copy the HTML code directly into your web page.

    • 7

To insert the workbook into your web page as an object, click on the "Insert" option within your web creation program and then click on "Object" or in some programs "File." Navigate to your web page folder and click on the saved web Excel workbook. The workbook will then be inserted wherever the cursor is on your screen.

    • 8

If you want to insert the workbook as HTML code, navigate to your web page folder and right-click on the saved web Excel workbook (the file will have a .html or .htm file extension). Choose "Open With..." and then click "Wordpad" or any other text editing program. Then click "Edit," "Select All" and "Copy."

    • 9

Open your web page creation program. Click on the "Insert" option within your web program and then click "HTML." A window will appear. Right-click and paste the HTML code into this window. The object will appear on your web page.

    • 10

Once you have placed the workbook into your page, you can select the workbook and move it around your web page. Play with the centering the object on the screen to find the best fit.

    • 11

Save your web page and then upload to your web server. Remember that the Excel workbook is static--the viewer of your web page will not be able to enter data into the sheet.
