How to Set a Default Gateway in Windows XP
Hubs and routers doesn't always use automatic settings, which leaves the manual way of entering certain settings the only choice. The default gateway equals the address of that hub or router. It is an essential part that needs to be correct in order for the connection to work.

Click on "Control Panel" on the Start menu.

Double-click on "Network Connections."

Right-click on the computer's active internet connection, usually "Local Area Network" or "Wireless Network," and select "Properties."

Select "TCP/IP" from the list and click on the "Properties" button.

Check the second radio-button to use manual address settings and find "Default gateway" as the third entry.
