How to Make a Profit As a Welder
There are many steps involved in the welding process; therefore, many welders are needed to complete even one project at a time. While welders can make a decent living, it is not a particularly high-paying job. Candidates that are trained, experienced, and loyal often have better luck earning higher salaries and staying busy.

While many companies will hire candidate with little to no training, candidates are going to be paid what they're worth. Welders with no experience aren't going to have much to offer until their training is complete, and their pay will reflect that. Training programs can be completed during high school (through vocational institutions) or after high school; but whatever the case, they need to be completed in order to earn a better living.

Become certified. The American Welding Society offers certification programs at different welding schools throughout the United States. Some employers also have their own process of certification that employees may opt for. Not all states require it, but it doesn't hurt to become certified. Being a certified welder is another great way to make more money.

Obtain additional training in specialty fields. As welders become more experienced, opportunities to become trained in specialty welding fields may arise. Welders can be trained to work as welding technicians, managers, supervisors or instructors. Welders can also be trained to work with more complex materials and equipment. Welding positions such as instructors or supervisors generally pay more money than a general welder.

Don't expect to be making top dollar right away. Even with formal education, hands-on experience is often the most valuable. Stay with a company for as long as possible. Many employers often promote internally and will give higher pay raises and benefits to their hardest workers.

Join a union. There are many different union organizations set up for welders. Being part of a union can help secure a higher pay, competitive benefits and a better work experience. Look into the different union options in your area before you apply for a job. Many unions will also be able to recommend different companies and organizations.
