Get Acrylic Paint Off Clothing

Acrylic paints are often used for arts and crafts and are commonly used in children's art sets. Bocour Artist Colors came out with the first acrylic paints to ever be commercially available in the 1950s; acrylic paint has been staining people's clothing ever since. Getting acrylic paint out of clothing is an easy task if done correctly. There are several proven methods that can take an acrylic paint stain out in minimal time and effort.

Things You'll Need:

    Several Simple Suggestions

  1. Step 1

Fill the sink or bathtub, whichever you won't need to use right away, with water. Add 2 tbsp. of salt, vinegar and ammonia. Soak the garment in the solution overnight and launder as usual the next day. If there is an area of the garment that has a lot more paint on it than the rest, use a soft- to medium-bristle brush dipped in the solution and scrub the area before soaking it.

  2. Step 2

Wipe up any residual wet paint if there is any, spray the stained area with Windex and scrub with a soft, clean, dry cloth before laundering.

  3. Step 3

Spray the stain with WD-40 and allow it to soak for at least 3 minutes. Scrub the area with a clean, dry cloth and launder as usual.

  4. Step 4

Remove the paint with a soft, clean cloth dipped in mineral spirits. Once the stain is no longer visible, launder the garment immediately.

  5. Step 5

Dip an old toothbrush in Pine-Sol and scrub the paint stain until it is gone. Launder the garment immediately afterward.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test each method on an inconspicuous area of the garment before using it to treat the stain.
