Virtual PC is free virtual machine software from Microsoft that allows you to run other operating systems on your system virtually without any changes to your current operating system. For users that want to test an operating system, Virtual PC allows you to install and test in a safe environment that doesn't affect anything outside the Virtual PC environment. You can install multiple operating systems on Virtual PC without portioning our hard drive. Installing an operating system on Virtual PC is a straight-forward process.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Virtual PC
  • Operating system disk
  1. Step 1

Download and install Microsoft Virtual PC if you haven't already (see link in Resources). Follow the instructions in the installation wizard to install Virtual PC.

  2. Step 2

Open Virtual PC and create a new Virtual Machine. You need at least 1 Virtual Machine to install an operating system. Click "New" to the right of the screen to start the creation wizard. Click Next > Create New Virtual Machine > Next again.
Type any name for your Virtual Machine and click "Next." Select the operating system you will be installing from the Operating System list and click "Next." Click "Next" to use the recommended RAM and "Next" again to create a new virtual hard disk. Type a name for your virtual hard disk and click "Next" and "Finish."

  3. Step 3

Click the Virtual Machine you just created to select it for your operating system installation. Click "Start." Insert your operating system disk into your CD/DVD drive and press "Enter" to boot your Virtual Machine from the disk. Be sure Virtual PC is running when you insert the CD.

  4. Step 4

Follow the set-up instructions for the operating system as they appear in the Virtual PC window. For instance, if you were installing Windows XP as a Virtual Machine, you would agree to a license agreement, select a partition on which to install Windows XP, format the virtual hard disk and proceed through the GUI setup. Each operating system will vary slightly during this process.

  5. Step 5

Go to the Action Menu and select "Ctrl+Alt+Del" to log in to the newly installed operating system.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use ISO images of operating systems to install in Virtual PC by selecting the image through Virtual PC's menu during setup.
  • Do not create a Virtual Machine until you know what operating system you want to install. Don't try to install an operating system on a Virtual Machine that has been created for a different operating system. Memory and disk size are created based on the operating system you created the machine with and may not be enough for a different operating system.
