How to Program a Direc TV Card
DirecTV broadcasts television and audio entertainment to households via satellite transmission. To access DirecTV services, you will need a satellite dish and a television receiver, which will allow you to change channels and record programs. The television receiver contains a programmable data card that saves relevant account information, such as your specific DirecTV package, recorded programs and favorite channels. If you purchase a new DirecTV system, your receiver will have a programmed data card preinstalled. However, if you need to replace your receiver or you purchase a used receiver, you will need to program the data card yourself.

Open the latch door on the right side of the DirecTV receiver. Pull the old data card out of the compartment and set it aside.

Slide the new DirecTV data card into the compartment. Push the card all the way in until you feel it snap into place and close the latch door.

Power up your television and DirecTV receiver. Access the system's menu by pressing the "Menu" key on the remote control. Scroll down through the menu that pops up on the TV screen and select the "Access Card" option.

After selecting the Access Card option, watch for a command to appear that reads "Press SELECT to begin or press BACK to cancel." Press the "Select" button on the remote control.

Wait for a new command to appear that reads "Invalid access card. Call customer service," followed by a three-digit code. Write down the code and press the "Exit" key on the remote control.

Call the DirecTV customer-service help line and give the customer-service representative the three-digit code that you wrote down. DirecTV will then send an electronic signal to your receiver, which will provide your data card with information regarding your account. The card and your DirecTV system will then be activated.

Tips & Warnings
Do not throw away your old data card, since your receiver may need information from this card to activate the new card. All of the necessary information should be provided by the electronic signal, but in some cases, you may need to provide DirecTV with your old data card.
Some DirecTV customers have had their accounts "hacked," which allows other people to access DirecTV services for free using another customer's account. This should not impact your DirecTV bill; however, if you feel as though your account has been compromised, or you notice unusual usage patterns on your account statements, remove your data card from the receiver and notify DirecTV customer service immediately.
