Dandruff is a pesky problem, with no easy solution. Ayurvedic remedies for dandruff use Indian herbs and medicinal oils to treat dandruff topically, as well prescribe using certain herbs, vitamins and minerals internally to treat the problem inside out. Ayurveda is a six thousand year old healing science from India. Literally meaning, the science of life, Ayurveda focuses on healing the whole person as opposed to treating the ailment just as a standalone problem. Dandruff, according to Ayurveda is attributed to a person with a "Vata" constitution. While people with the constitution are considered delightful with their creativity and energy, they turn fearful and anxious in an imbalanced state. The imbalance often also manifests as dry skin, dandruff, wrinkles and other bodily problems. Find out more about how to treat dandruff with Ayurvedic remedies here.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fenugreek seeds
  • Neem hair oil
  • Neem shampoo
  • Sesame Oil
  1. Step 1

Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds overnight. Make a fine paste of these seeds with water in a blender or with a mortar and pestle, and apply evenly to scalp. Leave it on for a minimum of 30 minutes and step into the shower to shampoo the fenugreek paste off. Fenugreek seeds are available in health food stores, and Indian grocery stores. A beloved spice in most Indian kitchens, fenugreek imparts a maple syrup like flavor to many dishes. Dr. David Frawley, a renowned Ayurvedic physician from New Mexico suggests cooking with fenugreek or taking a teaspoonful of fenugreek powder mixed with honey to treat dandruff from the inside out.

  2. Step 2

Use neem to treat dandruff on the scalp. The highly prized neem tree, known for its antimicrobial properties, is considered the "apothecary tree" in India. Every part of the neem tree, right from its leaves, to its stems, and its seeds are used in cosmetic preparations. Neem hair oils, shampoos, and conditioners are available in health food stores to treat dandruff problems. Some Ayurvedic physicians prescribe neem supplements to internally treat dandruff problems.

  3. Step 3

Massage hair with warm sesame oil two to three times a week. Work into hair thoroughly, and leave it on overnight. Shampoo it off in the morning. According to Dr.Pratima Raichur, an Ayurvedic practitioner who also runs a well known spa in New York city, warm sesame oil is calming and soothing to the body and a scalp massage with sesame oil not helps with dandruff associated with dryness, but also calms anxiety that can cause dandruff in the first place.

  4. Step 4

Incorporate stress reducing activities regularly into a daily routine. It could be a walk in the park, listening to a favorite music album, yoga, or meditation session. People with a "Vata" constitution benefit from a stable daily routine of meditation and other activities that soothe and ground them. Calming "vata" in a system will go a long way in treating dandruff from the inside out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Eat a vata pacifying diet.
  • Self massage body with nut or seed oils such as almond oil or sesame oil.
  • Avoid over-stimulating activities that increase stress!
  • Avoid stimulants like tobacco and caffeine.
