1
Start with clean nails. Wash your hands with hot soapy water to clean away oils and dirt, and scrape underneath your nails. Oils can hinder the nail polish from adhering well to your nails.
-
2
Lightly file the surface of your nails. A very slightly rough surface will help the polish stick.

3
Apply the first layer of polish in a very thin coat, taking care not to paint over your cuticles. If your nails are long enough, continue the strokes under your nails as well. Paint your nails in steady, straight lines, starting from the base to the tip. Take care that not too much polish is on the brush.

Before applying a second coat, let the first coat of polish dry for about half an hour. Painting too soon will cause bubbling, which will make the polish too easy to peel. Let your painted nails air dry, do not use heat to speed up the process.

5
Paint the second coat as in Step 3.

6
After the second coat of nail polish has been dry for at least half an hour, apply a clear top coat. You can find varieties that are fortified with teflon, and other no-chip compounds. Make sure to paint the top coat under your nail as well.

7
Give the nails time to dry completely before going about your normal activities.
