Attract Birds to Your Garden

Planting a bird garden is a simply process of combining bird attracting flowers and shrubs with housing, feeders and water. By creating all of the necessities a bird needs in one place you are sure to attract many varieties of these feathered friends.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flowering plants and shrubs
  • Bird feeders
  • Bird houses
  • A bird bath
  1. Step 1

The first step in creating the perfect bird garden is the location. Pick a location close to neighboring trees if possible. The area must have plenty of sunlight but also provide housing opportunities in near by trees. Birds will nest close to their food supply.

  2. Step 2

Place some bird houses and feeders in the neighboring trees. This will draw many varieties of birds to your garden.

  3. Step 3

Now that you have hung up your feeders and houses to attract the birds it is time for the flowers and shrubs in your bird garden. These are the additions that will attract your hummingbirds and butterflies.
    I suggest planting the following:

    Hollyhock (Hummingbirds and butterflies)
Asters ( Cardinals and Blue jays)
    Azaleas ( Humingbirds)
Beautyberry,Am.(Attracts many species of birds such as Painted Buntings, Mockingbirds, House Finches, Gray Catbirds, Brown Thrashers, Northern Bobwhite, Cardinals, Robins.)
    Beebalm ( Butterflies and Hummingbirds)
    Begonia ( Hummingbirds)
These plants will attract a large variety of birds to your bird garden.

  4. Step 4

Place a Bird bath in the center of your new bird garden. This will supply both a water supply and a bath for your new feathered friends.

Your new bird garden will soon become a magical place. A place of beautiful song, beautiful color and a place of wonder. Sit back and enjoy!

on 5/31/2009 Our feeders don't attract much variety. I'll have to give some different flower varieties a try.
