Things You'll Need:
- two bamboo placemats
- hot glue gun
- old lamp shade
- assorted trim (optional)
-
Step 1
Alter the look of a boring white cylinder-shaped lamp shade by making a placemat lamp shade with two black bamboo placemats and a hot glue gun. To begin, place one placemat flat on work surface with wrong side facing up.
-
Step 2
Even edges on bottom of lamp shade. With hot glue gun, run a thin line of glue along a 4" to 6" length of top and bottom rim of shade. Quickly attach placemat to hot glue by rolling lamp shade on top of the placemat.
Remember to apply the placemat so the bottom edges of the shade and placemat are even. Continue this process until you've reached the end of the first placemat. -
Step 3
There may be a short expanse of the lamp shade that is not covered. If this happens, center open portion of the lamp shade to the center of the remaining placemat and repeat the gluing procedure as before until entire lamp shade is covered.
-
Step 4
Look in the picture to see an inside view of the attached placemat lamp shade. Notice how one placemat overlaps the other. Place the newly transformed lampshade on the base and turn outer "seam" of placemat to the wall.
-
Step 5
Add your choice of trim if desired by hot gluing black fringe or black buttons to the bottom of the placemat lamp shade. At night, enjoy the subtle strands of light peeking through the lamp shade made with woven bamboo placemats.

on 6/14/2009 How clever! Thrift shops and garage sales would be a good source for inexpensive placemats.
