Mopeds are every where. We see all types of people riding mopeds for a variety of reasons and with the popularity of mopeds comes responsibilities. A moped is a motorized vehicle that has an engine under 50cc. It must not exceed 30 miles per hour and doesn't require the operator to shift gears. In Michigan we have our own rules and regulations for owning mopeds. The following is Michigan laws on moped ownership.

      When you are purchasing a used moped it's important to know what Michigan law requires. Any person 15 to 18 must have a valid moped drivers license in order to operate a moped. It is very easy for your teen to obtain. The department of motor vehicles has a study pamphlet to prepare your teen for the moped test. Over the age of 19 a moped license is not required, however you must have a valid drivers license.

      Mopeds are also required to have a license decal placed on the rear fender. These are good for three years before it needs to be renewed. A moped must have all it's safety features; horn, mounted headlight, mounted seat, brakes on both wheels, mirrors and tail and brake lights. In the state of Michigan it is illegal to ride two on a moped even though it might have a passenger seat.

      Full face and open face helmets

      Although it's not a requirement for anyone over 19, helmets should be worn for your own personal safety. Don't forget goggles or glasses to protect your eyes if the helmet you choose doesn't have a face shield. Be a smart driver, keep your moped in top condition, follow the rules of the road, be safe and have fun being a responsible moped owner in Michigan.

  • Always have teens 15 to 18 wear a U.S. Department of Transportation approved helmet.

  • Mopeds are not allowed on Michigan highways.
