When you are purchasing a used moped it's important to know what Michigan law requires. Any person 15 to 18 must have a valid moped drivers license in order to operate a moped. It is very easy for your teen to obtain. The department of motor vehicles has a study pamphlet to prepare your teen for the moped test. Over the age of 19 a moped license is not required, however you must have a valid drivers license.

Mopeds are also required to have a license decal placed on the rear fender. These are good for three years before it needs to be renewed. A moped must have all it's safety features; horn, mounted headlight, mounted seat, brakes on both wheels, mirrors and tail and brake lights. In the state of Michigan it is illegal to ride two on a moped even though it might have a passenger seat.

Although it's not a requirement for anyone over 19, helmets should be worn for your own personal safety. Don't forget goggles or glasses to protect your eyes if the helmet you choose doesn't have a face shield. Be a smart driver, keep your moped in top condition, follow the rules of the road, be safe and have fun being a responsible moped owner in Michigan.
