Things You'll Need:
- Right knowledge on breastfeeding
-
Step 1
Eat a nutritious diet. Eating right and incorporating nutritious foods into your meal boosts your milk supply. A good diet is not only beneficial to you but also contributes to the production of quality milk for your baby.
-
Step 2
Drink plenty of water and fluids such as milk and fruit juices to keep you hydrated and encourage production of milk. Stay away from caffeinated drinks and alcoholic beverages. It is known that caffeine causes you to get dehydrated therefore lowering your milk supply. A study has also shown that alcohol consumption by breastfeeding women causes hormonal disruption, decreased lactation performance and diminished milk supply.
-
Step 3
Avoid wearing tight or underwire bra. They can cause your milk ducts to get plugged which is not only painful but can also decrease your milk supply. Choose a well fitting cotton bra to prevent irritation caused by trapped moisture and comfortable enough for wearing.
-
Step 4
Get plenty of rest and stay away from stress. Not sleeping enough and stressing out continuously have a direct impact to production of milk. Women who are continuously sleep deprived and under stress often find their milk supply low.
-
Step 5
Make breastfeeding a priority. Nurse your baby every 2-3 hours to maintain your milk supply. If you're nursing often enough, and baby is sucking effectively, you will make enough milk. Also, pumping milk can help maintain your supply. Just make sure to use a quality breast pump to achieve maximum results.
