Step 1
You can almost always save ten percent at Lowes and Home Depot on items over $100 by asking a manager if he can give you a "customer satisfaction discount" on the item. You can explain that you were out of town for the last ten percent off sale and would like to purchase the item now, instead of waiting or shopping around at the competitor's store. Most managers will go ahead and grant you the ten percent discount once they learn they are about to lose your business.

Step 2
Shop for big ticket items on holidays. You can often save ten percent or more during holidays such as Memorial Day, Labor Day and the Fourth of July. If you do miss those sales, call around to different Home Depot and Lowes stores until you find a manager who will retroactively give you the holiday discount.

Step 3
Use moving coupons. Lowes and Home Depot often have moving coupons for ten percent off. You can often find the application for these in your local post office and the coupons themselves for sale on e-Bay. In most cases a manager of either stores will allow you to use the competitors coupons at their store. In addition to moving coupons, sale coupons are often honored at both stores. A manager would rather honor a coupon or give you the last sale price, rather than lose a sale. Also, Lowes and Home Depot credit card holders are often given ten percent discounts on certain items. You can just use your card and then pay it off before you are charged interest. Don't feel that you are being cheap. It is just being a smart consumer in these especially tough times.

on 9/8/2009 Price matching is a great way to get a discount too. Call all of the local stores and find the lowest price, then Lowe's will match the price plus 10 percent!

on 8/11/2009 Active or retired military also get 10% off at both stores but you have to ask for the discount. They used to only offer it on Veterans Day and Memorial Day, now I think it's their standing policy.
