Step 1
Do an energy audit of your house. You can hire someone to do this for you but you can do a basic audit yourself. Go from room to room and see if there is anything you can do to conserve energy.
-
Step 2
Use power strips to plug in multiple energy wasters and shut off the entire strip when you leave a room. Even gadgets that are turned off are still using energy.
-
Step 3
Use weather stripping to seal cracks and gaps in doorways and windows. This will help with the heating and cooling.
-
Step 4
Give your dryer a break and hang your clothes outside to dry. You can even install a clothesline in your basement for year-round line drying.
-
Step 5
Try growing a garden. Not only will your food taste better you’ll save energy by reducing the amount of energy needed to ship food to a store. Plus you’ll save energy by lowering your driving for shopping trips.
-
Step 6
Drive less. Take a bus, ride a bike or walk. If you don’t have mass transit try grouping your errands together to get it all done in one trip instead of several smaller trips.
-
Step 7
And of course, reduce, reuse and recycle!
