Step 1
Choose a font that is professional and easy to read. This is not the time to use script or “cute” fonts.
-
Step 2
Place your name and contact information at the top of the page. Bold your name and use all capitals.
-
Step 3
Objective statements are out of date. Instead use a career summary to highlight your qualifications and strengths.
-
Step 4
Include a section of your strengths: team leader / account management / high volume sales / marketing etc.
-
Step 5
You should go back at least ten years in your job history. Include the company name, dates of employment, location and job title. Highlight any accomplishments or achievements. Don’t just say “answered the phones” say “efficiently directed high volume customer calls”.
-
Step 6
You can put a short paragraph of your job duties and then bullet major accomplishments. Or you can just use bulleted statements to highlight your qualifications.
-
Step 7
Use words that will get a potential employers attention. Instead of responsible say directed or instead of accomplished say results-driven.
-
Step 8
Don’t use “I”. I was responsible for flipping the burgers.
-
Step 9
You can include a section for any honors, awards or recognition you have received.
-
Step 10
List your education at the bottom of your resume. Include any additional training and certifications.
-
Step 11
Do not include hobbies. You may think it makes your resume more personal but no employer is going to hire you based on the fact that you are at the 10th level of Dragon Masters.
-
Step 12
Don’t include references with a resume. Bring a reference sheet to an interview and only offer it if asked.
