How to Prepare Your Child for 2nd Grade
Summer is a wonderful time for children to kick back and relax. Unfortunately, some of what your first grader learned in school can be lost. Keep your child learning throughout the summer to prepare for second grade.

Go for nature walks and discuss things about nature. Look for animal prints and talk about which animal made them. If you see a bee on a flower, talk about how bees help flowers. Discuss the weather and the different kinds of weather.

Practice one-digit addition and subtraction math facts with your rising second grader. Purchase math fact flash cards at the dollar store and make a game of the review. During the summer, spend time on telling time and counting money.

Read daily with your child. Go to the library weekly. Get your child his own library card and encourage him to check out several books each week.

Download a set of the most commonly used words in the English language, called Dolch words, from the Internet. The words are available in age appropriate sets of flash cards. Practice with your child.

Locale free printable worksheets for your child online. Print worksheets on age-appropriate English, math, science, social studies and spelling topics.
