Step 1
Start by emptying your closet out completely. It throws the rest of the room into complete chaos, but I find this is the best way to tackle the closet. I always find items way in the back that I forgot I had! Once you have everything out of the closet it’s a good time to clean in there. Run the vacuum and wipe down the shelves.
-
Step 2
Before you put anything away make a pile of items that need to be repaired and a pile that needs to be ironed. Don’t you hate it when you’re rushing around in the morning and the shirt you want to wear is completely wrinkled? You can either spend time you don’t have ironing or waste time finding something else to wear. Same with the clothes that need repairs; you can stop grabbing those pants out only to say, “that’s right, the zipper is broken on these.” Getting on top of these things now will give you time you need later.
-
Step 3
If your closet is busting at the seams and you don’t have space for all of your clothes and accessories, pack away seasonal items in plastic containers. This way you can store them in the basement or even the garage and they’ll stay dry and won’t pick up any musty odors. Throw in a dryer sheet so they are nice and fresh when you open it and don’t forget to label the containers!
-
Step 4
Put your closet back together in sections. Put all like things together so you know where they are. Pants together, skirts together, you get the idea. As you are putting everything away you can take inventory of what you have. Now is the perfect time to weed out the items that you no longer wear or need. Make a pile of clothes to donate to your local charity. Getting rid of the things you no longer use will free up space and help unclutter your closet.
-
Step 5
There are tons of closet systems out there to help you get your closet in order but you can usually do without with just a little effort and organizing. If your closet has a big long shelf that runs along the top, you may want to invest in dividers to keep your piles from tumbling onto each other. An over the door shoe rack is also a great space saver, it gets your shoes up off the floor and lets you see your shoes. Not that the pile of shoes you had on the floor wasn’t a great plan, but this will help keep them organized.
-
Step 6
Getting your closet organized may take a little time but it will reward you with extra time later. Try to do a mini clean out each season. It will keep you on top of what you have and keep your closet looking great!
