Things You'll Need:
- Shampoo
- Water
-
Step 1
Choose a good shampoo. Shampoos that are cheaper seem to lather more. That is because they contain more emulsifying agents to lather up more. Professional shampoos are also a lot more concentrated so you will need a lot less than the cheaper brands.
-
Step 2
Now the first step is to remove the oil (Sebum) from your scalp! Not to actually wash your hair. You want to remove all the oil as well as any build up. You do this by putting a small amount (size of a dime of good shampoo, size of a half dollar for cheaper shampoo)and rub it together in the palm of your hands. Then start to rub and massage your scalp. You need to make sure you do this for a good 30 seconds or your not getting the oil and build up out. Your not washing your hair, just your scalp!
-
Step 3
Now rinse your hair for 30 seconds.. This is the step many people do incorrectly. It's very important you rinse all this build up and sebum that you've removed from your scalp and hair shaft. Continue to massage your fingers into your scalp until it's all rinsed away. At LEAST 30 seconds.
-
Step 4
Here is the REPEAT. This time you will use the same amount of shampoo, but since the sebum (oil) is already removed you are going to wash the hair. You will do the same thing as you did, by rubbing the shampoo in your palms but you will lather the hair. Again depending on the shampoo will determine how much suds or lather you will get. Don't worry too much about the lather, you'll feel the shampoo in your hands/hair.
-
Step 5
Last step before conditioner, you will rinse once again. You will also make sure that 30 seconds to rinse is used. It's very important to remove everything from your hair. Rinse well.
-
Step 6
Condition your hair as directed.

on 6/15/2009 You are so right! If you do a good job of washing your scalp, you also will avoid those nasty white dandruff flakes even without that expensive and often toxic dandruff shampoo!

on 5/31/2009 This was news to me: the first wash is for your scalp and the second one is for your hair. Thank God I only have one head! Thank you for this enlightening foray into shampooing the hair and scalp.
