Mix Samples to Get Custom Color
-
1
Purchase several 1-pint sample paint colors. The sample colors should be within the color range that you are trying to achieve, though they should be light and dark versions. Open two of the paint samples. Dip a tablespoon of each color of paint into the paint pot. Use the stir stick to mix the paints together.
-
2
Use the paint brush to apply a small amount of paint to the wall. Allow the paint time to dry. You can speed up the drying time by using a hair dryer. If the color is too light add another tablespoon of the darker color and mix the paint. Apply another sample to the wall and dry it. If this is not the desired color continue to add either a lighter or darker tablespoon of paint to get the desired light or dark tint.

3
Use red and blue paints to make purple colors. You can add black or white to darken or lighten the tint. When trying to make a green paint, use blue and yellow. Use more yellow for brighter greens and add black to darken the green.
-
4
Experiment with your colors. The easiest method to get the desired color is to keep adding a little bit more of one color at a time. Red and white will make pink colors. Add black to darken it. Green, orange and black will make a brown color.
-
5
Take your custom sample to a paint store that is known for mixing good quality colors, or take it to the same store from where you purchased the samples. The paint store will mix your custom color in the amount that you need to complete your paint job.
