Pilates can be done with a variety of equipment from as little as a mat up to a Reformer, the Cadillac or ladder chair. Pilates on the Reformer can be made challenging enough for those who've done Pilates for years with a good instructor. When choosing a Pilates Reformer instructor, it helps to understand the different philosophies and to keep in mind that if you switch from one instructor to another, the instructor might have learned a different method than your previous instructor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research the different Pilates methods and see which program offers the qualifications you desire in an instructor (duration of training, philosophy, etc.). All Pilates programs are working towards correct posture, muscular balance, and rehabilitation of the body towards proper movement and function. The method to achieving those goals is what differs. Common styles are Pilates are: STOTT, PhysicalMind (classic style based on Joseph Pilates original ideas, also known as The Method Pilates), Polestar Education, Power Pilates and The Pilates Studio (classic style, which the group also calls "authentic Pilates").

  2. Step 2

Read about the different methods to decide which one you like the best. For the classical approach, check these books: "Return To Life Through Contrology" and "Your Health" by Joseph Pilates. For more contemporary approaches, check these DVDs: "STOTT PILATES: Basic Pilates 2nd Edition DVD," "STOTT PILATES: At Home Reformer Workout DVD," "Power Pilates - Beginner Workout DVD," "Jennifer Kries Pilates Master Trainer Series DVD - The Mat (The Pilates Method)" and "Polestar Beginning Mat Workout DVD."

  3. Step 3

Look for a certified professional for your training. The more comprehensive their training and practice hours, the better they are likely to be, especially if you have previous injuries or other special circumstances.

  4. Step 4

Contact the association for the method of Pilates you believe is most appropriate for you via their website for local certified instructors (see Resources).

  5. Step 5

Call the instructors from that list to schedule a trial session. Most studios offer incentives to new clients, so you shouldn't feel limited. Try as many different studios and styles as you can. Choose the instructor that you found most pleasant to work with and most affordable.

Tips & Warnings
  • STOTT and Polestar Education both have updated the foundation of Pilates exercises with modern understandings of physiology and movement that weren't known when Joseph Pilates was developing his theories and methods. PhysicalMind, Power Pilates and The Pilates Studio stick to traditional Pilates moves and do things how Joseph Pilates did them. They are more classical in their approach.
