How to Build a Wooden Ice Fishing House

A wooden ice fishing house is a structure that protects you from the cold while you ice fish. It blocks rain and snow and helps contains some of your body heat. You can build a wooden ice fishing house just like you would build a small shed, using frames for the floor and walls, then covering the sides with plywood or siding. Start with a basic dimension of 4-by-4-by-6 feet.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 2-by-4 boards
  • Plywood sheets
  • Saw
  • Hammer
  • 3-inch galvanized nails
  • 3-inch galvanized screws
  • 2-inch galvanized screws

Instructions

    • 1

Create the floor and ceiling frames by cutting eight 4 foot lengths of 2-by-4 boards. Assemble four of them into two 4-by-4 square frames by nailing the boards together at the corners with 3-inch galvanized nails.

    • 2

Cut two more 4 foot lengths of 2-by-4 boards and slide them into the middle of these frames as support braces. Nail them in place with 3-inch galvanized nails.

    • 3

Cut four 6-foot sections of 2-by-4 boards and attach one to the end of each corner of the frame by sliding it inside the frame boards right at the edge of the corner, so one edge rests flush with the intersecting frame board and one side lays flush with the inside of the other frame board. Nail the 6-foot section to the frame with 3-inch galvanized nails. Do not countersink them.

    • 4

Attach the 6-foot boards to the ceiling frame in the same way as outlined in step 3. Make sure the ends of the 6-foot boards are flush with the top edge of the ceiling frame.

    • 5

Cut two 4-by-4-foot sections of 1/2-inch plywood (maple, pine or oak). Install one section on top of the floor frame, using 3-inch galvanized screws and a power driver. Install the other on the top of the ceiling frame using the same.

    • 6

Cut four sections of 6-by-4-foot plywood sheeting that is at least 1/2-inch thick. Usually, this simply involves cutting off 2 feet of length from an 8-by-4-foot sheet with a circular saw.

    • 7

Mount and fasten these sheets to the outer frame boards using 2-inch galvanized screws.

    • 8

Cut four more 4-foot lengths of 2-by-4 boards. Install them in the center of the wall frames, horizontally across the frame, 3 feet from the bottom, by driving 2-inch galvanized screws into the boards from the outside of the walls. These act as braces to stabilize the ice fishing house.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is a simple variation and perhaps the most inexpensive way to make a wooden ice fishing house. You can add vinyl siding, Typar paper or anything you like to the walls, just be sure the frame can support the extra weight.
