Mold can be a constant battle for those who live in humid areas. Mold thrives on any surface with the right conditions, such as moisture, warmth and darkness. Beyond being unsightly to look at and smelling terrible, mold can be linked to respiratory ailments, so it is imperative that it be dealt with as soon as possible. Removing mold from painted wood surfaces isn't fun or exciting, but it is a necessary chore.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Newspaper
  • Soft to medium-bristle brush
  • Washing soda
  • Towel
  1. Step 1

Place newspaper underneath the furniture to catch debris. It's better to do this outside, if possible. If you can't, use caution and try to catch all the discarded mold spores so they can't attach themselves to anything else in the home.

  2. Step 2

Use a soft to medium-bristle brush to brush away as much of the mold as possible.

  3. Step 3

Mix a solution of 4 to 6 tbsp. of washing soda and a gallon of warm water.

  4. Step 4

Dip the brush in the solution and scrub, using more solution as necessary.

  5. Step 5

Wipe the wood surface dry with a soft, clean, dry towel.

  6. Step 6

Set the wood object outside in the sunlight, if it can be moved. Sunshine kills mold spores.

Tips & Warnings
  • Painting over wood surfaces with a mildew-resistant and mold-resistant paint may help prevent mold in the future, but it is not safe to use on windowsills or on children's furniture. Keep furniture clean. Set it outside in the sunlight for a couple hours at a time, to help prevent mold in the future.
  • Wear gloves and a mask. Work in a ventilated area or outside when removing mold.
