A sinks is usually not thought of as a household item that needs to be replaced. However, over time a sink's finish gets worn and cracks or chips can occur. If a sink is to be installed into a countertop that does not already have a sink, the countertop will of course need to be cut. Whether an existing sink is being replaced or a sink is being installed into a countertop for the first time, self-rimming kitchen sinks are an excellent choice for their ease of installation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Mark the area of the countertop to be cut by placing the sink upside down on top of the sink, then by tracing an outline of the sink with a pencil. Remove the sink and draw a second line 5/8" inside of the traced line. The second line will be the cut-line.

  2. Step 2

Drill a 3/4" pilot hole just inside the cutting line using an electric drill equipped with a spade bit.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the countertop to be cut by supporting the underside of the sink. Supporting the bottom of the countertop is necessary to prevent the portion being cut from falling and damaging the structure.

  4. Step 4

Insert a down-cutting blade attached to a jig saw through the pilot hole, then use the jig saw to cut along the entire length of the cut-line.

  5. Step 5

Apply a 1/4" bead of silicone caulk around the underside of the self-rimming sink's flange with a caulking gun.

  6. Step 6

Position the sink into the countertop by holding the sink's drain opening, then press down on the sink to create a tight seal between the sink and the countertop. Wipe any excess caulk away with a plastic putty knife to complete the installation.
