How to Open a Manipura Chakra Meditation

The manipura chakra, which is often shown as red to represent fire, is located in the navel. The chakras represent hubs of energy in the body and can be opened and focused on to refresh the self and enhance meditation. While each person's method for reaching this point will be unique, there are some general guidelines to assist in this form of meditation.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. This place would ideally be your personal meditation chamber or area, but it could be anywhere you find relaxing. A public park is often a popular choice.

    • 2

Stretch. This isn't strictly necessary, but by stretching out the muscles, you can loosen tension in the body that may distract you during meditation. Burning incense is also a popular addition to relaxing the body and getting in the proper frame of mind.

    • 3

Assume your meditation position. For most people this is cross-legged with the hands palm up on the knees. You should be comfortable; your back should be straight, enhancing calm and measured breathing. Before beginning meditation, take a few moments to make sure your position is where you want to remain for your session.

    • 4

Begin your meditation. This will establish a path to the manipura chakra, as you shouldn't start off trying to open a chakra. The meditation should be done in stages. Relax and find a peaceful state of mind before moving into your chakra.

    • 5

Open your manipura chakra. This is done by directing your focus onto the fiery energy center that rests in your stomach near the navel. Visualize the chakra and direct your energy into opening it. For some, picturing the red, warm energy spilling out and through their body from the manipura source works well. For others, picturing your mind entering the manipura, as if your meditative self is being lowered into the chakra, works better. Whichever method is more effective, make certain that, once you've finished your manipura chakra meditation, you close it by reversing your visualization technique and scaling down your meditation until you can gradually awaken refreshed and purified.

Tips & Warnings

  • Often people are helped by speaking or thinking a mantra as they meditate. For the manipura chakra, the word is Ram.
