How to Pick Locks in Oblivion IV
While playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, it's common to come across doors and chests that are closed with locks. Rather than ignoring these locks, you can use your skills to open them. Chances are you already have some lock picks in your inventory that you took from enemies or lockless chests. By using these lock picks, you can enter a lock-picking minigame. When passed successfully, you'll gain access to all of the spoils available in the locked chest or just inside the locked door.

1
Enter the lock-picking menu by pressing the A button while looking at a locked door or chest.
-
2
Tap up on your joystick for the first tumbler. Do this several times and you'll see that the tumbler alternates from slow to fast.
-
-
3
Press the A button when the first tumbler is at the very top of the lock. This is where the fast-slow pattern comes in. If you try it when the tumbler is moving fast, there's a chance your lock pick will break and you'll have to start all over. Time your A button for when the tumbler is moving slowly and has paused at the top of the lock.
-
4
Move on to the next tumbler. This will be harder than the first. The tumbler will move faster and have an erratic pattern between slow and fast movements. Push up on the joystick many times until you get the hang of the tumbler before pressing the A button.
-
5
Try these steps for all of the lowered tumblers. How many tumblers need to be picked depend on the lock level, displayed at the top. Once the lock is completely picked, the chest or door will open.
