Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet before opening up the unit. Loosen the screw holding the metal clamp onto the vent hose at the rear of the dryer. Slide the hose off the fitting, wobbling it back and forth to loosen the connection if needed.

Find your electric dryer's heating element cabinet. Most types of dryers have this cabinet on the rear, but it may also be located on the front for other types of electric dryers. Check your owner's manual if you are having trouble locating it. Unhook any clips or loosen any screws that hold the cabinet's panel shut. Open the panel and use needlenose pliers to remove the electrical wires from the existing heating element.

Locate the cylinder-shaped metal cover over the dryer's heating element. Tilt the cover toward the back and remove it from the hooks that hold it in place. If you are replacing an old element, loosen the screws and take out the existing heating element.

Place the new heating element into the cover and tighten the screws that hold it in place. Set the cover onto the hooks again and tilt it toward the front until it locks. Attach the electrical wires to the heating element and close the cover of the heating element cabinet. Reattach the clips or tighten the screws on the panel. Reconnect the vent hose to the rear of the electric dryer and tighten the screws holding the metal clamp onto the fitting.

Plug the electrical cord back into the wall and turn the dryer on for 15-20 minutes. There may be an oily residue on a new heating element. Allowing the dryer to run without any clothes inside will burn off this coating and get rid of the smoky smell that can accompany a new element.
